Nicholsons of Skye
Battle Cry "Scorrybreac"
The Nicholsons have been a Hebridean clan for over 700 years. The Chief
took his designation from Scorrybreac, near Portree in Skye. The first
Nicholson on records of history, was John, son of Nicail, early in the
14th Century.
In the 19th century, the Nicholsons along with all
the other Highland Clans were badly affected by the Highland Clearances.
The Chief was forced to abandon the ancestral home of Scorrybreac, and
his family settled in Tasmania where the present chief of the clan lives.
"In 1987, part of our original clan property
was for sale. Within 9 months, the world wide clan raised the entire amount
to purchase the 130 acre Ben Chracaigh (ben crak-aig) property. This wildly
beautiful spit of land juts out into the Sound between Skye and Raasay
just above Portree. It encompasses the legendary Piper's or MacCoitar's
(MacArthur) cave. The control of the property and funds has been placed
in perpetual trust under Urras Clann MacNeacail with a group of Clan members
living on Skye as property managers. The North American membership has
established the Corrybreac fund, Inc. to continue the fund raising effort,
not only for Ben Chracaig, but for other projects of historical importance
to the Clan" - Excerpt from The Clan MacNicol Brochure, Dana McNicol,
1606 - 1541 Riverside Drive, Ottawa, Ontario, K1G4E2, Canada
Way to go, guys!! Let all the Nicholson descendants
get behind this worthy project!
A great many of the Nicholsons who left in the early
1800's from Scorrybreac went to Prince Edward Island, where many of their
descendants still live today. These Nicholsons of PEI are mostly descended
from Malcolm Nicholson, who was the son of the 12th Chief of Scorrybreac,
the Reverend Donald Nicholson. This Donald was a notable man in his day.
He was Episcopal minister of Kilmuir from 1663 to 1696, and he died in
1697. Few records in the Church of Scotland will ever surpass his, for
32 of his descendants were ministers. He married three times, and left
23, or some say 25 children. Seventeen of these children were by his third
wife MARGARET MORRISON, who was the daughter of Reverend Kenneth Morrison
of Stornaway.
Descendants of Reverend Donald Nicholson
12th Chief of Scorrybreac
This picture was taken on Skye in 1997, it shows two descendants of Reverend Donald Nicholson the 12th Chief of Scorrybreac. To the left is Murdo Nicholson, whose family still lives on Skye - Unfortunately Murdo himself passed away shortly after this picture was taken. He was a grand old man, and extremely helpful to islander and tourist alike on Skye. On the right, is pictured Sarah Gillis, whose family has been in Canada for nearly 200 years now. Yet still, the resemblance between these two is quite amazing! They both have what I call "the Nicholson eyes" (very, blue, very twinkling) Behind them, looms the deserted lands of Scorrybreac.

the last chief to live at Scorrybreac, he emigrated to Tasmania where he
drowned. He was succeeded by his brother John the 20th chief. He was an
