The Smiths of Stirlingshire were hereditary Armourers to the Grahams of Castle Mugdock. The Smiths became Landowners in 1140, when they recieved lands from the Barons of Castle Mugdock in Strathblane, Stirlingshire. They were mentioned as being landowners in Craigend in Strathblane in 1345. In 1670, in view of his father’s loyal service in the armies of James Grahame, the “Great Marquis”,  Robert Smith was able to purchase the castles of  Craigend and Mugdock.

  Mugdock Castle Barony of Mugdock

Robert Smith, the first Laird of Mugdock and Craigend Castle circa 1670.
1.Son Smith (2nd Laird of Mugdock)

Son Smith, the 2nd Laird of Mugdock was ? (son of Robert Smith) He had children;

1.Son Smith (probably Robert) 3rd Laird of Mugdock - he must have died with no issue, because he was succeeded by his brother John Smith, who was a younger son of the 2nd Laird.)
2.John Smith (4th Laird of Mugdock)

John Smith, the 4th Laird, was a younger son of the 2nd Laird. He was a soldier until having been wounded in Flanders in 1747, he returned to Glasgow to become a bookseller. John Smith & Son opened in 1751, and now has six shops in Glasgow, Stirling, and St. Andrews. He died in 1816. He had children;
1.Archibald Smith. He was a successful merchant in the West India sugar trade. He became Glasgow’s Dean of Guild in 1799. The Dean of Guild had absolute control over all new building work and alterations to existing structures. His word was final, and could only be challenged in a court of law. Archibald had a son named William Smith.

2.John Guthrie Smith. (5th Laird of Mugdock)
John Guthrie Smith  This John was a well known local historian. In 1874 he built the Victorian mansion at Mugdock castle where he lived until his death in 1894. He was a prominent member of the Merchants House and was Dean of Guild in 1891. This was the first time that three generations of one family had held this important office.The 4th Laird of Craigend was one John Smith who died in 1816. His son became the 5th Laird. This 5th Laird had a cousin named James Smith of Jordanhill, who was an amateur architect. He created an asymmetrical building of octagonal, square, and circular towers furnished with embrasures and corbels. It was the focus of the surrounding landscape, approached by way of a gently curved, tree lined avenue leading from a gazebo known locally as “Smith’s Folly.” The stables were built around the same time as the castle for the estate’s horses, carriages, grooms and coachemen. The block also included a circular bull pen, byre and kennels and was used as a livery and garage until the 1930’s.
 In 1851 the last Smith Laird died and the estate passed to Sir Andrew Buchanan, ambassador to the Viennese Court. It the early 20th century it was tenanted by George Outram, newspaper proprietor and Sir Harold Yarrow, the Clyde shipbuilder. The Buchanans sold Craigend to the Wilsons after WWII.

     This is a brief history of the Smiths of Castle Mugdock and Craigend in Stirlingshire. Where does our own ancestor Robert Smith fit into this picture? The earliest Robert Smith I could find on the Scottish baptismal records, was a Robert Smith who lived in Errol, Scotland. For this conjectural tree, see below.

    Who was “Robert the Smith”? He was noted in Scotland on an ancient manuscript as early as 1159 A.D. From this, we can only assume two things. 1.He most likely had a son also named Robert, and this is how the name Robert Smith came down to future generations. But who was Robert a “Smith” to, and to what clan did he really belong? For the answer to this question, we must look to localities, rather than names. Our Smiths came from Stirlingshire Scotland, and they were most likely a branch of the same Smiths who were hereditary armourers to the Grahams - the most notable among them being The Earl of Montrose, one of Scotland's greatest soldiers. Thusly, our earliest Smith ancestor could very well have been a Graham himself.

    Our Robert the Smith ancestors built the armour, and fired the swords for no doubt countless of the momentous battles in Scotland's history. Braveheart, King Arthur, Camelot, the Knights of the round table, the legendary sword Excaliber (certainly made by a Smith!), the wizard Merlin, Rob Roy, Mary Queen of Scots, King Robert the Bruce, Banockburn, William Wallace, all these people and events have one thing in common - the burgh of Stirling. It has always been said, that “whoever controls Stirling, controls Scotland” - this is the primary reason for the burgh’s major importance on the stage of Scotland’s history.

3.Walter Smith baptised 1578 Errol
We know nothing more about this Robert Smith, except that he had 3 children baptised to him in the parish of Errol Scotland in the 1570’s. There were no marriages or children baptised to either of his sons Robert or Walter in Errol Scotland, so we must assume either that either these boys died young, or they left for greener pastures elsewhere. There is, however, a Robert Smith of the right age, who had a son Robert Smith baptised in Edinburgh Scotland. It is about this same time, in which we see a Walter Smith suddenly appear in Kilsyth Scotland, with the name Robert also common in his family. From this, I deduce that the descendants of Robert Smith of Errol migrated somewhat South to Edinburgh, and then Westwards towards Kilsyth Scotland.

He emigrated with his parents in 1856 to Woodstock Ontario, and later moved to Hullet Ontario, where he is found listed in the census for 1871 at 025 E 320. He is also listed in the 1880 Ontario Directory as living in Hullet Twp, Post Office at Harlock, address Con 11 lot 1, Business farmer, year settled in County, 1856. This farm is still in the possession of his descendants, as of August 22, 1966. (George, s/o John, s/o Robert Jr.)
     He married, in Tuckersmith Township, on March 29, 1861, Dorothia Murray, born July 21, 1838 in Brantford Ontario, the daughter of John Murray and Jane McRoberts, emigrants on the Portia in 1834.  She died on March 24, 1925 in Hullet Ontario age 85 years, and is buried in the Burns Cemetery in Hullet Ontario beside her husband.
    The 1871 census is interesting in that it seems Robert Smith Jr. was a superstitious man! In that year, in that he owned 7 milch cows, 7 horned cattle, 7 sheep, and 7 swine. These numbers were no mere accident, because in that same year, he sold or exported 8 sheep, 6 swine, and 2 cows.  It is quite obvious that he culled his herds so he would have 7 of each! He had 98 acres, and in 1871 produced 40 bushels of spring wheat, 200 bushels of barley, 300 bushels of oats, 100 bushels of  peas, 35 bushels of potatoes, 500 bushels of turnips, 50 bushels of carrots, 15 tons of hay, 500 pounds of butter, 50 pounds of wool, and he cut 30 cords of firewood. He had one house, three barns/stables, 2 carriages/sleighs, 1 cultivator, 1 reaper/mower, and 1 fanning mill in 1871.
