Alexander Sandy
gradually lost the use of his legs at an early age - when a child, he walked
barefoot, and followed his father ploughing in the field. According to
the knowledge of the day, he "caught a cold in his feet", and eventually
lost the use of his legs. Today, we would probably diagnose this malady
as being Polio. But nothing much stopped Alexander Sandy - he used a horse
and wagon to get around, and sold rum.
Alexander Sandy was still a Highlander in the finest
tradition. In later years, he lived with his elderly mother, but after
she died, he was nervous about staying alone in the house at night.
Someone told him to lock the door and secure the windows - unheard of in
this day and age in PEI. But Sandy told them "I would be glad
to see some one come in the door or windows, its what comes in through
the walls that I'm afraid of!"
