Obituary of John Murray

From the Huron Expositor, May 24, 1874

"We have to record the death of another of Huron's Pioneers. Mr. John Murray departed this life at his residence near Egmondville on Saturday morning last. Mr. Murray came to Canada from Galloway Scotland in the year 1834. He first settled in Toronto where he remained 2 years, after which he removed to the County of Brant, and resided for 2 years on the Brantford Plains. He came to the County of Huron in the year 1838 and settled on Lot 11, Con. 5 in Tuckersmith Twp., where he remained until within about a year of his death. Mr. Murray was the fourth settler in Tuckersmith south of Egmondville, Messers James Chesney, Hugh Craig and Michael Donovan - all of whom have now passed away - being the only settlers in that section of the Township before Mr. Murray came in. About 15 months ago Mr. Murray suffered a paralytic stroke, and since he has been constantly confined to bed, and for some months passed, was utterly unable to help himself in any way. He was a quiet industrious man and was much esteemed and respected by all who know him. Mrs. Murray although some years her late husbands senior is still hale and hearty and to all appearances likely to live many years yet."
