                                                    The Loves of Inverness and County Cork Ireland

                                                                     George Love and Anne Jermaine

 Family tradition passed down, says that the Love family Originally came from Inverness Scotland, and way back when, did some favour for the King of England. Consequently, he granted them some land in Southern Ireland. Evidently this land was an "Entailment" i.e. it was to be passed down to the eldest son, and our ancestor was not the eldest son, but one of the younger sons.
 The Scottish part of this story is most likely true, since Loves in Scotland, are a member of the Scottish Clan Mackinnon. They are descended from Fingon, grandson of Gregor, son of Kenneth MacAlpin, King of the Scots.
 To add more weight to the English side of the family story, this makes sense as well, since our Love family remained firmly in the Church of England when they were in Ireland. Anne Jermaine's name is of English origin as well. This name is variously spelled Jermyn, German, Germaine.  According to the naming patterns of the children, Anne Jermaine’s mother’s name should have been Isabella.
 Their second born daughter’s name was Elizabeth, this was probably the name of George Love’s mother. George named his firstborn son Richard Love, this was likely the name of his father.
 It is not likely that our Loves were part of the “Ulster Plantings” either, since they lived in Southern Ireland, rather than Belfast, and Northern Ireland. This in turn, adds more credence to the possibility that the story about the favour to the English King is correct.
 George Love Sr. was born in 1809 in Ireland and died in 1889 in Ontario. His wife Anne Jermaine was born in Ireland as well, in 1812, and died in 1896 in Ontario. They are both buried in the Egmondville United Church Cemetery in Tuckersmith, Huron County Ontario. (OCFA HU-3253, L100) It is not known what year they emigrated, but it is known that they came from Skibereen, Country Cork Ireland.
 It is not known when their marriage date was, but if George was roughly age 25 when he married, then it would have been circa 1834. Isabella was no doubt their first child. George Love Sr. and Anne Jermaine had children;

A1. ISABELLA LOVE  born and died in Ireland. If Isabella was probably their first born child, she would have been named for Anne Jermaine’s mother.

A2. ISABELLA LOVE born 1835 died 1861 married Alexander Macaa born 1817 died 1899. She is buried in the Egmondville United Church Cemetery, Tuckersmith, Huron Co Ontario with her parents. OFCA HU-3253,L100. With children;
 a.James Macaa born 1858 died 1874 unmarried.
 b.John Macaa born 1859 died 1945 unmarried.

A3. ELIZABETH LOVE born circa 1840 in Huron Co,  married  29 JAN 1862   Grey, Huron, Ontario, Hector Macneil of Grey born 1836 in Canada, died 11 MAR 1865 Grey, Huron, Ontario s/o Archibald Macneil of Grey. If Elizabeth was the 2nd surviving daughter, was she named for George Love’s mother?

A4. SARAH LOVE born 1841 died 1926 married in 1863, Hugh Macneil born
1831 died 1901. Sarah was probably named for a grandmother, either grandmother of George Love or Anne Jermaine. With children;
 a.Anne Isabella Macneil born 1865 married John Coates. She would have been
              named for her maternal grandmother Anne Jermaine.
 b.Mary Jane Macneil born 1866 died 1939 married James Bremmer. She would
              have been named for her Paternal grandmother.
 c.Alexander Macneil (was Hugh Macneil’s father’s name Alexander Macneil?)
 d.Sarah Margaret Macneil born 1871 died 1948 married John Willoughby. #21019-
               71 (Huron Co) McNEIL, Sarah Margaret, f, b 9 Oct.1871, father - Hugh McNEIL, farmer;
                mother -  Sarah LOVE,  Grey twp

A5. DOROTHY LOVE born circa 1845 married Robert Shaw. With children;
    B1.Marylyn Shaw married Mr Ballantyne.
    B2.Sarah Margaret Shaw born 1869 died 1960 married Robert Bremmer.
    B3. Dora Shaw married Mr. Hunter.

A6. RICHARD LOVE born circa 1847 died young (he was a witness at brother Thomas wedding in 1873), but he was not listed on the 1881 census, so presumably he died between 1873 and 1881. He was firstborn son, so we must presume that George Love’s father was Richard Love.

A7. THOMAS LOVE Love born 1848 died 1897 married in 1873, Jemima Macneil born 1851 died 1926, d/o Donald and Marion  Campbell of Grey, Ontario. Thomas was 2nd born son, he should have been named for his maternal grandfather (father of Jemima Macneil, but I don’t think his name was Thomas) For his children, see the next generation below

A8. JOHN LOVE born 1849 died 1937 married Anne Lehman born 1860 died 1945.
They are both buried in the Egmondville United Church Cemetery in Tuckersmith Huron County Ontario with John's parents. OCFA HU-3253,L100. With children;
A1 Elizabeth Love born 1884 died 1914 married William Hay
B2 George Love born 1886 died 1903

B2 Anne Isabella Taylor born 1876 died 1964 married John Stewart Wren b. 1877  d. 1948.

                   THOMAS LOVE AND JEMIMA MCNEIL

Thomas Love was born 1848 in Upper Canada, and died July 25 1897  in McKillop Ontario. He was the son of George Love and Anne Jermaine who emigrated to Canada from Country Cork Ireland. According to family legends, he once rescued a small boy from a burning building, and later this boy grew up to become a Senator of the USA, by the name of Fergus, or Ferguson. Also according to family stories, the reason for his death at the relatively young age of 49 years, was due to later physical problems he suffered as a result of this rescue.
 He married in 1873, Jemima MacNeil was born June 14 1851 (age 50 years and a widow in 1901 census ) in Upper Canada, and died  in 1926  age 75 years in McKillop Ontario. She was the daughter of Donald MacNeil and Marion Campbell of Grey Ontario. It is possible that Marion Campbell’s father’s name was Norman, because she had a brother named Norman Campbell. Children of Thomas and Jemima:

A1.Anne Marion Love born 1874 died 1933 married Alexander Cuthill born 1879 died 1935. She was named for both her grandmothers Anne Jermyn and Marion  Campbell. She was not listed at home in the 1901 census. With children:
      B1.Margaret Cuthill married Archibald Campbell.

A2 George Richard Love born November 12 1875 died 1957. He would have been named for his father George and his grandfather Richard Love. He married Martha Shannon b 1878 d 1925. George was still living at home age 26 years in the 1901 census. With children:
     B1. George Shannon Love b. 1910 died 1987 married Bertha Hogart b. 1910, still alive in 1994 in Walton Ontario.

A3.Isabella Mary Love born 1876 died 1905 married James Henderson. She was likely named for her grandmothers, one of which was Isabella and one was Mary. She was not listed at home in the 1901 census.

A4. Ellen E.  Love born March 2 1879 died 1963 unmarried. She was age 22 years living at home in 1901 census

A5.Dorothy Agnes Love born Jan 27 1881 in Morris Ontario, died 1954 married William Smith born 1878 died 1949.
For their family follow the link.

A6.Thomas Edwin Love born May 17 1884 died 1964 unmarried. He was at home age 17 years in 1901 census.

A7.Jessie Love born 1887 died 1888.

A8.Norman Campbell Love born March 28 1891 died 1992 unmarried. He would have been named after Jemima’s mother, Marion Campbell. Marion had a brother named Norman Campbell - possible also, that Marion’s Campbell’s father’s name was Norman Campbell. Norman Love was listed as living at home age 10 years in 1901 census.
