John Gillis was born c1770 in Stencholl, Trotternish Skye, and emigrated in 1803 on the Polly to Orwell Bay Prince Edward Island. For the Gillis origins on Skye, see Gillis of Skye.
According to Malcolm Macqueen, "There is a tradition that John Gillis, a Skye man who settled in Orwell Cove in 1803, built a log structure near the French cemetery, probably in 1804, which for years was used both for church and for school."  Malcolm says also, that "John Gillis was probably the first person to be buried in the cemetery of the Belfast Church". John married on Skye circa 1797,  CATHERINE NICHOLSON, daughter of Old Donald Nicholson and his wifeCatherine MacArthur of Skye, Catherine Macarthur was daughter of the celebrated piper Charles Macarthur. She died on Skye, but Old Donald Nicholson emigrated on the Polly with his grown up children to PEI.  In 1819 another Gillis family emigrated from Skye, a widow named Anne Nicholson came with her grown up family. Her husband was Hugh Gillis who died on Skye. This Hugh Gillis was brother to John Gillis, and his wife Anne Nicholson was sister to John's wife Catherine.
